Lessons from Two Disastrous Typhoons

While most people are preparing for the Christmas season, our countrymen from Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City are being destroyed by typhoon “Sendong”. They say that this typhoon can be compared to “Ondoy” that also ruined the big part of Manila and other nearby provinces. Flash Floods, land slides and other unexpected problems related to the calamity killed thousands of our countrymen. With these calamities, do people already learn their lessons?

We already know what causes those tragedy but we still continue to do the same. We cut trees from our forest illegally and we throw our garbage anywhere we want. The government already gives directives to those people who will cut one tree will replace it by hundreds. Each municipality provided dump truck to collect garbage to dispose it properly. Biodegradable must be segregated from non-biodegradable waste so that those can be recycled and can still be of use.

Those who have gardens can use compost bin to have an organic fertilizer instead of those fertilizers made from chemicals that can harm the soil. We don’t need to put the blame on our government or to others because this problem can’t be solved by chosen few but with the helping hands of each and every one of us. We hope that in each and every calamity we had, we also learn our lessons.
